Following Trump’s announcement, Democrats quickly pushed back on the idea of the U.S. acquiring Greenland from Denmark to make it an American territory for resource and national security purposes. While some claimed the proposal was false, Secretary of State Marco Rubio told SiriusXM’s Megyn Kelly on Jan. 30 that the bid is “not a joke.” “We went there, and we went right to where the scientists were, practically underground. What they told us that they were measuring then, say this is about 2008, around that time, they told us that what they were measuring in terms of the melting of the Arctic, by the time it got to the peer review, it would already be obsolete that the melting was going so fast,” Pelosi said. “So we went because of climate and a big delegation, bipartisan. It was really important,” Pelosi added. “If we had reached out to Greenland to talk about cooperating on security, on climate, on all of that, that would have been a very positive thing. I think that more people think that Elvis Presley is alive in the United States than Greenlanders who think they want to be part of the United States. It’s like 6%.”
